Bathtubmusic.com Makes A Splash With New Online Music Website and Indie Artist-Focused Approach

Bathtubmusic.com, a premier music site for independent artists selling DRM FREE downloadable music and CDs, announced the relaunch of their website with a new look and features. But behind the cosmetic changes lies a renewed focus on meeting the changing needs of today's independent artist.

"We realize that we're in a crowded field of online music retailers," noted Bathtubmusic.com CEO, Moses de los Santos. "In order to compete, we had to develop a package that provided independent artists with a greater return on their investment than our competitors."

A one-stop retail shop, Bathtubmusic.com allows artists and labels to upload an unlimited number of free albums for digital sale. This is particularly attractive to independent labels with large catalogs who want to start earning revenue on older releases. "While labels may focus on their most current releases, there is often untapped value in their catalog. We want to make it as easy as possible for them to monetize it."

Bathtubmusic.com has also committed to setting the industry's lowest fees for physical CD sales. In addition to only charging a $9.95 per CD setup fee, Bathtubmusic.com retains just $3.00 per CD sold - both the lowest rates available. "By charging a lower commission, we provide artists with greater flexibility to price their product as well as extra revenue they can invest in their careers."

In addition to providing full retail support, Bathtubmusic.com also strives to help expose its artists, such as through the "Bathtub Broadcast Station," their answer to the traditional music store listening station. They have also forged unique business relationships with strategic partners to help its artists' music get promoted to an audience of over 1,500 websites representing some 65 million site visitors.

Life Span, Joseph Maas Debute CD - When New Age Meets The Next Age

Be it the slow, liquid tones of an antique 12 string guitar played in a unique style against the backdrop of New Zealand's Ohakune rain forest (Life Span) or the haunting strains of the ancient double reed Daduke (After the Storm), this music is an exploration in sonic textures invoke strange lands and new vistas within the mind's eye.

Through use of both rare traditional instruments such as the Middle Eastern Daduke, as well as electronically invented instruments (that have essentially never been heard before), with all the delicate phrasing and subtle nuances normally heard in the concert hall, a life-long dream has been realized in this work.

Joseph Maas is a life-long musician well versed in jazz-fusion, world beat and new age genres performed on an array of different instruments.

Born in Kansas City, Kansas in the mid 1950s Joseph began playing music professionally at age 15. With influences that range from Steve Howe (Yes) and Josef Zawinul (Weather Report) to German bassist Eberhart Weber, Joseph moved to Northern California in 1976 playing small venues usually as a solo artist and always performing original (if not experiential) compositions.

He studied recording engineering and computer programming in the early 1980s at the then famed Mendocino Technical Community School. In this era of big 1 inch tape reels and 8 track recorders the size of washing machines, Joseph began to use the sound technology reproduction medium as if it were another instrument. This practice continues today as applied to digital technology. Pushing technical boundaries to bring out the spirit, essence and natural timber of the performance has been a focus from the beginning.

Throughout the 1990s, playing and composing regularly, soon it became apparent that studio perfect recordings could be achieved digitally in small studio setting given the right equipment and enough patience, and most importantly without the astronomical costs of such endeavors only a few years earlier. It was clearly time to put to good use his decades of experience in both music composition and recording technology.

Joseph writes, "Music production and recording technology have come of age to the extent that exquisitely orchestrated compositions can be fully realized by the solo artist working in an independent studio."

This debut CD, LifeSpan is truly a labor of love. Thirty months in the making, Life Span is a grand project created without the pressure of production studio budgets and deadlines. It is clear that compositions on Life Span were carefully crafted to reveal unique chapters of an atmospheric journey. In many ways it's an adventure, a theme-propelled road trip through ever changing landscape on the way to the next great age of music.

New Sponsor Added As Contest Deadline Nears

As the 2007 Great Lakes Songwriting Contest enters its final four weeks, The CD Seller company has joined the contest as a sponsor.

The CD Seller, an online company based in Minneapolis, has created a CD selling tool for independent performers. The company is the newest of four sponsors of the regional contest, now in its second year, which is now open to current residents of the eight Great Lakes states and the Province of Ontario. Other sponsors are Songbridge, the song marketing company based in Ontario, Canada, which provides a weekly pitch sheet to its songwriting members and a free e-newsletter with tips and insights on marketing; Elderly Instruments of Lansing (MI), one of America's largest mail order suppliers of vintage and new stringed instruments; and Lamb's Retreat for Songwriters of Royal Oak (MI), which holds songwriting weekends in Northern Michigan.

Thirteen winning songs will be chosen this year, and the Grand Prize has been increased to $1,500 cash, with additional publicity and promotional opportunities. Winners also receive prizes and discounts from the four sponsoring companies.

The CD Seller has created a professional and affordable CD display and sales tool for musicians and bands who market their CDs at live performances. The product, created by a professional musician, can be seen and ordered exclusively through the website, www.thecdseller.com.

The deadline for entries in the 2007 Great Lakes Songwriting Contest is April 14. The contest is organized by The Michigan Songwriters, the Ann Arbor-based cooperative that previously sponsored the Metro Detroit and Michigan Songwriting Contests. The group expanded to the Great Lakes region for the first time last year, and the contest drew about 500 entries.

"A lot of great music has come out of our part of the world, from Motown to Prairie Home Companion to Chicago Blues and New York jazz," says contest spokesman Bill Frank. "It's produced big names like Bob Dylan, Prince, Madonna, the Barenaked Ladies, and Jars of Clay, just to name a few. But some of the best music is written by the locally known, little-known, and unknown songwriters, and that's who we're looking for."

The 2007 contest is open to all ages and all styles of music. Songwriters are not forced to pick a particular category for their songs. Each song is judged on its own merits, not by how well it conforms to the conventions of a certain genre of music. There are no age limits, and past winners have ranged from teenagers to senior citizens. Rules, entry forms, and information on the 2006 winners can be found on the contest website, www.GreatLakesSongs.com.

Musical Storyteller Chris Towzey Releases Debut CD, "Rockin' At The Stoplight"

The music of singer/songwriter/guitarist Chris Towzey is a journey through classic R&B, rock, and world styles bound by clever and spiritually enlightened lyrics, delivered by our honest, soulful, all-American vocal tour guide. On his debut CD, Rockin' At The Stoplight (now available at christowzey.com, iTunes, and CDFreedom.com), the title track welcomes you to the party with an R&B tinged, horn-driven romp through the city streets. Each song tells a story, embracing sounds that embody the characters and moods being explored, from a honky-tonk homage to fine women, to bluesy commentary on the state of the world's consciousness.

Bored with the life of a sideman in a long line of local bands, Towzey decided to take a leap and become an artist in his own right. He started taking long-distance songwriting lessons with hitmaker Harriet Schock to transform his first artistic ramblings into accessible lyrics. Towzey soon moved from Marin County to Los Angeles and put together a dream team of backing musicians, engineers, and recording and mastering studios to bring life to his vision.

World influences are apparent in Chris' music, and his keen interest in Shamanism and non-western philosophies and spiritual orientations have steadily helped him to return to his original passion of playing music and releasing this CD.

Jersey City's Own Amy Speace Among 2007 Independent Music Awards Vox Populi Winners

Wildflower Records is proud to announce that Amy Speace was selected as an Independent Music Awards (IMAs) Vox Populi Winner in the category of best country song for her single, "The Real Thing." The IMAs is a program that promotes independent artists, labels & releases to more than 11 million music fans & industry insiders.

Now in it's 7th year, this is the first time the IMAs has opened the voting process to include fans and industry voters that were not on the official judging panel. Designed to provide more opportunities for indie artists to get heard and win new fans, these IMA Vox Populi Winners are promoted to industry and music fans via print, online and other promotional initiatives.

Amy Speace's latest album release, "Songs For Bright Street," has been attracting lots of attention, spending 3 months in the Top 10 of Folk Radio Charts and 10 weeks in the Top 10 of Roots Americana Charts (both in the summer of 2006). The album was chosen as one of Indie-Music.com's Top 25 Indie Releases. PBS distributor FastFocusTV is to feature Amy on their new series "Frequency," hosted by Dave Koz. Amy was recently nominated "Emerging Artist of the Year" for the 2007 Folk Alliance Awards and has been asked to open for Little Feat, Heartland, Phil Vassar, John Corbett Roger McGuinn, John Gorka, Peter Mulvey, Tracy Grammer, Sloan Wainright and Steve Forbert.

Amy has also won considerable critical acclaim. The Village Voice (NYC) observed that Speace is "taking her Americana away from twangy contemplation toward tangy confrontation" and noted that she's "not another of those breathy would-be child poets, but a real singing writer of songs." Time Out New York stated, "Amy Speace plays sweet, twangy folk music with a clear voice and an innocent vulnerability." The Nashville Scene noted that she "balances wry humor with open-hearted honesty" and renowned Nashville critic Robert K. Oermann, writing in Music Row, dubbed her a "new star."

Kobo Town To Share The Stage With Treasa Levasseur At The Live Wire Music Series On March 31st

Toronto-based roots-calypso act, Kobo Town will join Canadian singer/songwriter Treasa Levasseur at the Octave Theatre in Kingston, Ontario on March 31st as part of the Live Wire Music Series.

"Live Wire Music has been a huge fan of our debut record, Independence, since we released it last year," comments Kobo Town front-man Drew Gonsalves.

The Live Music Report listed Independence among their Top 10 outstanding 2006 discoveries and had this to say about the record:

"It is daunting to attempt to describe a CD created by a poet with the eloquence of Trinidadian-born Drew Gonsalves. His "St. James" would fit nicely in an anthology of Caribbean and Caribbean-born poets that would also include the works of Linton Kwesi Johnson. Some heavy material, but there is levity too ‹ and rhythm! Lots of sounds to savour."

Kobo Town produced and self-released their debut album Independence in November 2006. Drawing heavily upon the sounds of traditional calypso, roots reggae and dub poetry, the album is a collection of stories which offer a running commentary on a wide variety of social and political themes including domestic violence, homelessness, globalization, the war on Iraq, and the various frustrations and betrayals of the post-colonial era. Independence was co-produced by Lyndon Livingstone (David Rudder, Andre Tanker, Mighty Scrunter) and Drew Gonsalves at the Razorshop in Maraval, Trinidad.

Billboard Top 10 Artist Vernon Neilly Performs At Los Angeles Area School For Students

Recently, contemporary jazz award winning, Billboard Top 10 charting artist/producer Vernon Neilly took some time out to perform at a Los Angeles area school. Vernon who is a stickler for education and supporting music in public school programs, is always reaching out to young aspiring talent who are interested in learning about and pursuing professional careers in music.

Vernon was supported by his all-star band consisting of Juan Nelson (Grammy Award winning bass player and member of Virgin Records recording group "Ben Harper And The Innocent Criminals), Derek Organ (drummer Janet Jackson, Gladys Knight, New Edition, Mary Jane Girls), Norman Weatherly (Ike Turner Band, Rose Royce), and Edward Neal (The Dramatics, Bloodstone, Rufus Thomas). They descended upon the world famous Musicians Institute Hollywood, where they gave a tremendous, crowd pleasing performance for the international body of students attending.

After the performance, as is customary with Vernon, he took and answered questions ranging from his career in the music business to the type of gear that he uses during performances. After the Q&A the students went crazy when Boosweet Records promotions and marketing director Pierre Neilly gave out CD's, t-shirts, hats and other merchandise to the very eager and excited students, making the event a total and complete success.

Vernon Neilly will travel to Japan in April to perform, visit music schools and, most importantly, gain support for a big charity jazz event called, "Katrina Struck Jazz Charity" that he is involved in. "Katrina Struck Jazz Charity" was put together by Japan Enterprise LLC and their director Chiharu Fujimoto. Realizing that the government has fallen very short on their promises to victims of the Katrina Hurricane disaster, this event will raise money to support these victims, some of whom are still homeless and who do not even have the basic necessities to survive. Vernon will do interviews at FM Yokohama, J-Wave Radio, Musicum TV and several other media outlets, as well as interviews for some of Japan's leading music trades such as Jazz Life.

UK Pop-Punk Band Break World Record Before Canadian Tour

UK pop-punk band Buck Brothers broke the Guinness Book of World Records on March 5, 2007 for playing 28 concerts in 10 hours around London. A mere three days later they will cross the Atlantic for a Canadian tour that kicks off during Canadian Music Week in Toronto on March 10th.

The famed Leicester Square in central London was the spot for the bands first and last gig on Monday with stops in Camden, Soho and Islington. Kansas City, a German group held the record with 26 concerts in 12 hours in Hamburg in 2004. The Bucks planned 30 shows and managed to hit 28 venues to break the record.

"This record attempt has really just been a dress rehearsal for our Canadian tour," says Andy Duke. "Having heard reports about petrol shortages and the deep freeze that are taking place in Ontario and Quebec at the moment, we thought that a massive 'gig-a-thon' would be the best way to ensure that we're in tip top shape for our forthcoming two week Canadian tour. The fact that we achieved a world record while doing so is a bonus."

"We succeeded in the face of adversity. Whatever could go wrong did," continues Duke. "A rented PA system ceased working by the second gig, one of the two vans broke down entirely and a member of our support crew, one of the drivers, was struck down with food poisoning. Despite all of these things, we soldiered on and our success is really a testament to the great teamwork of our band, crew and supporters. Receiving text messages from fans throughout the day, from all around the world including Canada, really turbo-charged our resolve to beat the record."

London is one of the few places where attempting to beat the world record is possible because of the close proximity of so many venues. Fans and volunteer roadies helped carry and set up equipment around London from 11am until 11pm. An independent adjudicator was in attendance for all 28 gigs gathering evidence in support of the Guinness Book of World Records attempt. "It was a real challenge. But we did it. I'm delighted, it's fantastic."

"Little Nashville" Lead Singer Performs At Home Of Grand Ole Opry On National TV

J Juliano, lead singer of Little Nashville, a popular children's group performing music with today's "hot" Country sound, has proved beyond a doubt that he appeals to adult listeners as much as to children by standing toe-to-toe with adult Country's best aspiring artists in the recent Colgate Country Showdown.

J Juliano made his way through a field of over 60,000 contestants to compete against four other adult acts for the National Title in the 25th Anniversary Colgate Country Showdown at Nashville's Ryman Auditorium on January 25, 2007. His outstanding performance in the competition will be nationally televised on stations such as ABC, NBC, CBS, FOX, and GAC (Great American Country) during the months of March, April, and early May.

The Colgate Country Showdown, billed as America's Largest Country Music Talent Search, is as well known in country music circles as American Idol is in pop music circles. Virtually every major country music entertainer of the past 25 years has participated in the Showdown.

Because the Showdown is an adult-focused competition, the songs Juliano chose for the competition were not Little Nashville songs. However, the professionalism and fun, high-energy spirit he brought to the stage was exactly the same level of performance you¹d see at a Little Nashville show. His polished stage presence and Juliano's excellent guitar skills had many audience members staunchly rooting for him and standing in their seats.

Amy Speace Signs Up To The MusicDish Network

MusicDish LLC, an artist development firm and magazine publisher, announced the addition of New York-based country/folk artist Amy Speace to its MusicDish Network roster. MusicDish will provide full online marketing and management support as well as seeking booking and business opportunities in the Canadian music market.

MusicDish founder Eric de Fontenay initially met Amy and her management team Grassy Hill Entertainment at Dewey Beach Music Festival in 2005 and has been following her career ever since she released and gained critical acclaim for her album "Songs For Bright Street."

"It's ironic that it would take two years and halfway across the world at MIDEM in Cannes, France for us to decide to work together," noted Eric de Fontenay. "It was well worth the wait, though, she is one of the most exciting indie folk singers on the scene."

Amy's "Songs For Bright Street" has been attracting lots of attention, spending 3 months in the Top 10 of Folk Radio Charts and 10 weeks in the Top 10 of Roots Americana Charts (both in the summer of 2006). Kobo Town To Perform Special Show In Support Of Canadian Friends Of Sudan And Burma

Toronto-based roots-calypso act, Kobo Town will perform a special concert in support of Canadian Friends of Sudan and Burma at Barrymore's Music Hall on Saturday March 10th in Ottawa, Ontario. Jokko and the Souljazz Orchestra will also be performing. Admission is $15.

"It's important for us to participate in this event to help raise funds and more importantly, awareness of the corruption and injustice affecting the people living in these regions," comments Kobo Town front-man Drew Gonsalves.

Gonsalves speaks from far more than an observational standpoint. He named his band after the vibrant and turbulent neighborhood in old Port-of-Spain, Trinidad, where both he and calypso were born. Kobo Town strives to recover the social conscience, satirical storytelling and strong acoustic/organic rhythms that characterized Trinidadian music in the past. For members of the eight-piece outfit, the name suggests an origin as well as a destination.

Catherine melds Celtic and world-music melodies with contemporary rhythms and cinematic elements on her album 'Visions and Dreams'. Her CD has gained radio airplay internationally. Positive reviews from an admiring press and industry insiders have come rolling in. Artist, Repertiore and International Licensing magazine stated: "As an award winning composer, Catherine Duc has an achieved an excellent cohesive tone... a truly inspired collection of work".

International Music Online describes Catherine's album as: "A remarkable piece of work from a remarkably accomplished musician composer." Renee Gelpi, host with the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation's Galaxy service raves: "Your music on Visions and Dreams is glorious. Excellent writing and arranging brings out exciting emotions. Loved it." Download.com says: "It's hardly surprising that this Melbourne composer has a film degree, her ambient soundscapes could easily find their way onto a movie soundtrack: a coming-of-age tale, say, set in a mysterious foreign land, with Duc's mix of Celtic folk winds, lush synth washes, and pulsing percussion underlining a dramatic meeting of cultures."

The Water Music Records Group Announces The Launch Of Their "10 Spot" Label

While i-Tunes set the standard by offering tracks for just $.99 each, the 10 Spot label has been launched with the digital download customer in mind. Believing in the mantra "10 Tracks, 10 Bucks, Every Time" 10 Spot stands firm with their new price point.

"10 Spot gives the consumer ten good reasons to buy physical product. Offering ten tracks for ten dollars while getting the benefit of the CD package, the look, the feel, liner notes, artwork and artist information, it's like a free gift with purchase!" states Brad Pressman, President of The Water Music Records Group of labels.

The label's debut artist Shannon Moore combines the spunk and fire of The Pretenders' Chrissie Hynde with the sexy savvy of Sheryl Crow and this singer/songwriter knows how to deliver a song. Shannon's new CD "Evaporate" hits the streets March 6, 2007.

Canadian born singer / songwriter Justin James' new album "Sun Drenched" has already received considerable media attention including placements on TV shows like Laguna Beach. A regular entertainer on the Southern California club circuit, his six-piece band Justin James & The Sons of Beaches has a reputation for spirited shows. A tentative street date has been set for Justin's album in April 2007.

10 Spot's most prestigious artist, Tiffany, catapults her career from a 80s Dance/Pop icon to a truly inspired singer/songwriter with her new release on 10 Spot Music in May 2007. Having recently signed on for Season 5 of VH1's hit reality show Celebrity Fit Club, Tiffany's release will coincide with the airing of the show.

The Water Music Records Group consists of 10 Spot, Water Music Kids, Water Music Dance and the parent label Water Music Records. Water Music Records has been primarily a Los Angeles based Electronica music label. Launched in July 2000, Water Music Records releases, markets and distributes albums in various sub-styles of Electronica including Chill Out, Lounge and Down-Tempo and Dance music. Slip-N-Slide Records (Street) To Debut Single By Hip Hop R&B Songstress, Ariana

As the rest of the commercial music industry sleeps on one of the most talented Hip Hop R&B singer/songwriters to come along in a while, Slip-N-Slide Records (Street) has decided to let the fans decide if 17-year-old Ariana will get her big break. Slip-N-Slide Street is touted for launching the careers of rap artists Plies, Citty, and Deuce Poppi based on their Street buzz. Slip-N-Slide Records is also the home of Trina, Trick Daddy and Rick Ross, all of whom have current and prior hits burning up the charts.

Ariana, the self proclaimed "Street Diva," will debut her single "Let Me Do My Thang" on the Slip-N-Slide Street website. This track is produced by multi-platinum producer CC Lemonhead. In the '90s, CC Lemonhead ushered in the most popular club songs of the time, such as 95 South's "Whoot There It Is," the 69 Boyz's "Tootsie Roll,, Dis-N-Dat's "Freak Me Baby," and the Quad City DJ's "C'mon N Ride It (The Train)." CC put his mojo on this track and Ariana put some Hip Hop R&B flavor to it, along with a feature from JB, to give you what should be one of the hottest songs of the coming year. Ariana needs all of her worldwide fans, new and old, to mobilize and vote for her single, "Let Me Do My Thang," which will be featured 5 days from now on Slip-N-Slide Street. Her management states, "While they are sleeping we're gonna wake them up with a hit from the Street."

In March, 2006, BET.com picked Ariana for the "Ya Heard" section which features one artist per week as the hottest unsigned talent in the country. In April, 2006, legendary entertainment Mogul, Maurice "The General" Starr, known worldwide for discovering, producing, promoting, and writing all the hit songs for pop teen icons "New Kids On The Block" and R&B hit teen sensations "New Edition," labeled Ariana "Another, just like the others", as he compared her to prior acts he obtained success with. "Ariana revives R&B with a new sound!" - http://audiogemz.com/buzzworthy.html

Kobo Town @ Club Midway, NYC

Listen Liberally hosts MusicDish Organic Entertainment treated us all to yet another great night of music, food and drink at Club Midway (25 Ave B, NYC). Tonight's feature was Kobo Town. They are a group named after an historic neighborhood in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad where traditional calypso music is said to have been born. Currently based in Toronto, Canada this group has tight ties to Trinidad.

Those ties can be felt in the heart of their music and the kindness of their personalities. The tiny basement of Club Midway was no longer in NYC but transported to a sunbathed island with hot sand and cold beer. You couldn't help but move to the flowing harmonics and ebbing beats. Even those like me who are hopelessly deficient in the rhythm department. But the room of warm, fun-lovin' smiles would outshine any inhibitions.

Once again the host Club Midway impressed me with their sound. For such a small space their soundman‹whose name escapes me‹did a remarkable job of keeping things sonically balanced. This was only my second time in the club but both times were equally pleasing to the ears. Anyone who's been in small loud rooms in NYC knows how important that is. And of course the food was once again fantastic.

Music & Brands - Key Focus At The "Music For Images" Conference At MIDEM 2007

The increasing collaboration between the music industry and brands will be a key theme at the "Music for Images" conferences at MIDEM 2007. Launched in 2004, "Music for Images" explores how music is being used in film, video games, TV and advertising. The fourth edition of "Music for Images" will take place at MIDEM on January 22. The 41st edition of MIDEM will be held in Cannes, France, January 21-25, 2007.

"Music for Images" 2007 comprises three dedicated panels focusing on video games, film/TV and advertising/branding. Panellists will include major representatives in each field and the entire programme will be chaired by US music industry figure, Daniel Glass, President, Glassnote Records (US).

Returning for the third consecutive year at "Music for Images" will be the ever-popular listening sessions. A total of three separate listening sessions will once again provide companies with the opportunity to submit and play their tracks in front of international music supervisors who are actively looking for music to place in video games, adverts and film scores (see below).

The first panel to kick off the conference is entitled "Video Games: The Latest Challenge for Labels and Composers?" Headlining the session is the music visionary/producer and founding member of legendary funk outfit Chic, Nile Rodgers. The world-renowned music producer, associated with an impressive array of artists from Madonna to David Bowie, is also the founder of one of the world's leading labels for licensing and distributing videogame soundtracks, Sumthing Else Music Works. As such, he will be giving his insight into the new opportunities for artists and leading talent in this newly emerging musical genre. Other speakers include Nick Wiswell, audio manager, Bizarre Creations ("Project Gotham Racing"); Richard Jacques, composer for titles such as "Jet Set Radio" and "Headhunter" and Eckhardt Consulting's Randy Eckhardt, in charge of music licensing for Guitar Hero, one of the most critically-acclaimed music games to date.

"The New Role of Music in Feature Film Marketing" will be the second dedicated focus and presents an exclusive look at how music has become a key element in the feature-film business. The session is organised with Hollywood sync agency Zync and features Drew Sherrod, music supervisor for Open Road Entertainment and Niki Gascon, director of music for Warner Brothers Pictures.

The third and final panel poses the question, "Are Brands Shaping the New Music Economy?" While the music industry is looking for new revenue streams, brands are searching to build deeper relationships with consumers. The promising but complex mix between music and brands ranges from the simple sponsorship deal to innovative partnerships. Expert representatives from each side will be looking at how each side can work with the other. Speakers for this panel include: Johan Jervoe, VP Marketing & Communications West Region, McDonald's (Germany); Cornelia Schneider, Head of Services/Sponsoring, Volkswagen (Germany); Duncan Bird, VP Futures, Sony BMG Entertainment (UK); Mark Boyd, Head of Content, BBH (UK), Kenneth Hertz, Senior Partner, Goldring Hertz and Lichtenstein (USA).

On Monday January 22, Sony Computer heads up the first listening session in which the winner will have his music placed in a video game and also be offered a work experience session with Richard Jacques, the award winning composer.

The second listening session will offer contestants the opportunity to submit music for the hit US hospital series Grey's Anatomy, currently one of America's favourite dramas. The US music supervision agency Zync will ask contestants to compose or propose tracks for a specific set of scenes from the series. One or several winners will be retained by The Chop Shop's Alex Patsavas, music supervisor for Grey's Anatomy and numerous other popular US shows.

Do I Really Need A Manager?

Copyright © 2006 Catsask Music & Entertainment.
Duss Rodgers.

Catsask Music & Entertainment
Seriously...You Need To Know!

So you want a manager...

You want a manager real bad...Do you really need one or is the thought of pounding the pavement too much for you to bear. Most bands and artists are able to get by without a manager for quite awhile. A good rule of thumb is generally when the gigs and the overall operations of your band's business is too much to handle, then it's probably a good time
time to get one.

So what exactly does a manager do?

Well a manager is much like the teenage kid your parents left you with when they went out to have some "adult" fun. An expensive baby sitter! They arrange for you to be at your gigs on time, get you the occasional spot to play and if you get lucky and find a really good one...he/she might even help you get your laundry done properly...

When starting out as new band, there really isn't any point in having a manager. You see there really isn't that much that a manager can do for you at this point, that you can't do for yourself. When the business of doing music is becoming grander than the creation of it, then you will definitely be ready for management.

Remember your manager is there to assist you with the day to day operations of your band. Professional and experienced managers get paid a percentage of everything you take home. This fee can be anywhere in the range of 15-25% of your income "after" expenses. Most do good work and some may be flighty but they all will want some form of commitment to do business with you.

D.I.Y. - Do It Yourself

Bands that are thinking of finding management in the early going would be better off recruiting the help of an enthusiastic, business oriented, go getter friend. They can grow with the band and learn the ropes from you...and for you, through experience. This is a great way for you and your newly appointed manager to get to know if the personal chemistry is a fit, or if the work involved is something they can wrap themselves around.

If you opt for the "professional manager" be sure to verify their qualifications before you sign any type of agreement with them.

  • Can they really get you the gigs they say they can?
  • Have they worked with any other bands?
  • What business references can they provide?

Can you talk to those bands to get an idea what to expect? If not, do your own homework and find out why she/he doesn't want you talking to their other clients. Or forget working with this person alltogether. Be suspicious, cautious and extremely careful of who you choose to conduct business with. Most want contracts and more than a few don't or can't deliver. If you have to go the contract route try to get a 3-6 month probation time period in to ensure that either party can go their own way if the magic isn't happening. Most importantly get a lawyer to look over your agreement, please. It may cost you a little now but will save you so much in the long run.

  • If you can do it yourself stick with it.
  • If you don't know how...ask.

Choose or nominate someone in the band able to handle the business end of things. Everyone is good at something. Artwork, planning, schmoozing...whatever! Delegate assignments according to strengths and watch the returns gained for your work. Recruit fans and family members to help you with some of the leg work. Start a street team and put their ears to the street. Have them assist you with postering and acquiring those "unknown" gig spots.

Learn the art of delegation and things will slowly begin to manage themselves.

Keep the music real and we thank you for your undying
support of independant music as always...

S.A.C. - Songposium 2006

Copyright © 2006 Catsask Music & Entertainment.

Catsask.com

The Songwriters Association of Canada has given independent as well as signed artists a fantastic venue to get a deeper insight into the music industry’s inner workings. Covering areas such as publishing rights, mechanical rights, music distribution, song writing and the intricacies of song writing collaborations they’ve found a formula that appears to be fully in line with their objectives. The empowerment of the independent songwriter’s skill set.

This year the S.A.C. has found an excellent means of bringing today’s song writer to a higher level with some very precise and extremely useful information that budding and veteran song writers alike will be able to take with them and elevate their present song writing strengths and make some marked improvements on their personally perceived weaknesses.

This years seminar carried a distinct urban flavour, which in my opinion was a strong move. The urban music scene in Canada has been lacking proper representation but is something that is definitely on the rise. With buy ins to the R&B and Hip Hop flavours of music from recognized organizations like S.A.C., only good things can be seen on the horizon for today’s Canadian urban artists.

Showcasing industry experts Choclair, Jully Black, Byram Joseph, Haydain Neale (jacksoul) and Janis Nixon on this year’s panel, the Songposium participants were exposed to many different and extremely talented perspectives on how to make their mark in today’s music industry. Your Music and Public Relations

Duss Rodgers
Catsask Music & Entertainment
Seriously...You Need To Know!

In the music industry we presently find ourselves in, it is imperative that musician and band public relations are as professional and complete as possible. A proper internet presence along with constant musical appearances are the order of the day.

Artists Who Are Not Being Seen Are Being Forgotten

It's true that most independant acts nowadays are satisfied with self management, however, with self serviced public relations there is usually little or no accountability! In order to ensure your requirements are being met, you must be absolutely confident that the tasks your act needs completed, are indeed completed as effectively and efficiently as possible.

Music Relation Services Are A Step In That Direction

Noone can claim to be able to fulfill all of your needs, but to get you pointed in the right direction primed for growth is a must. With assistance in completing a professional website, artist biography and photographic portfolio. Music services like Catsask can work with you to complete all of the aformentioned tasks, while staying within your current budget allowing you to work on what you do best. Create great music!

CatsAsk is proud of the fact that we not only provide assistance with the barebones necessities of professionalism, but strive to be a catalyst in the development of your art.

Providing you with creative and proven methods of increasing your mailing list, and direction with the "business" end of your artistic development, our independant and progressive tactics deliver.
